The expression of UV damage-specific DNA-binding proteins was examined in various phylogenetically distant species with differing DNA repair phenotypes. Two distinct constitutive DNA-binding activities, one specific for cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers and the other for non-cyclobutane dimer photoproducts, were detected.
