Cyclobutane pyrimidine dimers (CPDs) are directly involved in signaling for UV-induced apoptosis in mammalian cells. Failure to remove these lesions, specially those located at actively expressing genes, is critical, as cells defective in transcription coupled repair have increased apoptotic levels.
