After phosphorylation to the corresponding diphosphates, 2'-azido-2'-deoxycytidine and 2'-difluorocytidine act as powerful inhibitors of ribonucleotide reductase. Phosphorylation requires deoxycytidine kinase, an enzyme with particularly high activity in lymphoid cells.
