Heparan sulfate biosynthesis initiates by the transfer of alpha-D-GlcNAc from UDP-GlcNAc to the D-GlcA moiety of the linkage tetrasaccharide, GlcA beta 1-3Gal beta 1-3Gal beta 1-4Xyl beta 1-core protein.
