Telomeres safeguard the genome, acting as sentinels of oxidative stress and preventing chromosome ends from eliciting a DNA damage response. PROTECTION OF TELOMERES 1 (POT1) is a highly conserved telomere protein, essential for chromosome integrity and telomeric DNA replication.
