Background: Apolipoprotein E (ApoE) is the leading genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD), which is the leading cause of dementia worldwide. Most people have two ApoE-ε3 (ApoE3) alleles, while ApoE-ε2 (ApoE2) is protective from AD, and ApoE-ε4 (ApoE4) confers AD risk.
