BACKGROUND: Stress-induced activation of ERK/Drp1 serves as a checkpoint in the segregation of damaged mitochondria for autophagic clearance (mitophagy). Elevated cytosolic calcium (Ca2+) activates ERK, which is pivotal to mitophagy initiation.
