PURPOSE: Sepsis is hallmarked by high plasma cortisol/corticosterone (CORT), low adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), and high pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC). While corticotropin-releasing hormone-(CRH) and arginine-vasopressin (AVP)-driven pituitary POMC expression remains active, POMC processing into ACTH becomes impaired.
