Retroviral Gag targeting to the plasma membrane (PM) for assembly is mediated by the N-terminal matrix (MA) domain. For many retroviruses, Gag-PM interaction is dependent on phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate (PI(4,5)P2).
