BACKGROUND: Mixed ductal-lobular carcinoma (MDL) of the breast is poorly understood. Dysfunction of E-cadherin, a cell adhesion protein encoded by the CDH1 gene located on 16q22.1, causes loss of cell adhesion and cellular polarity in lobular carcinoma (LC).
