BACKGROUND: Cough is a common symptom in several respiratory diseases and may occur in healthy subjects as a defense mechanism against noxious inhalants. Cough response is mediated by transient receptor potential vanilloid-1 (TRPV1) expressed by C-fibers in the airways.
