Chronic gastritis caused by Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection could lead to the development of gastric cancer. The finding that multiple gastric cancers can develop synchronously and/or metachronously suggests the development of field cancerization in chronically inflamed, H. pylori-infected gastric mucosa.
