Neurons synthesizing corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) in the paraventricular nucleus of the hypothalamus (PVN) are activated during acute stress and act via the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis to increase systemic levels of corticosterone (CORT).
