The biosynthesis of this elusive metabolite is directed by the pks gene cluster, which encodes a hybrid nonribosomal peptide synthetase-polyketide synthase (NRPS-PKS) assembly line that is hypothesized to use the unusual polyketide building block aminomalonate.
