Phenotypic markers and cytotoxic function were monitored in cultures of normal human mononuclear cells obtained from peripheral blood or spleen and stimulated by recombinant interleukin-2 (IL-2; 1,500 U/ml). Fresh spleen cells contained less than 5% natural killer (NK) cells (CD3-NKH1+), which increased about threefold after activation with IL-2.
