Heparan sulfate proteoglycans are abundant matrix and membrane molecules. Smooth muscle specific deletion of one heparan sulfate biosynthetic enzyme, N-deacetylase-N-sulfotransferase1 leads to decreased vascular smooth muscle cell proliferation, and vascular wall thickness.
