Dystrophin is a protein linking the cytoskeleton to a complex of transmembrane proteins that interact with the extracellular matrix. The fragility of the cardiomyocyte cell membrane resulting from the lack of dystrophin is thought to cause an excessive susceptibility to mechanical stress.
