Glutathione transferase ζ 1 (GSTZ1), also known as maleylacetoacetate isomerase, catalyzes the penultimate step of tyrosine catabolism and metabolizes several α-halocarboxylic acids, including dichloroacetic acid (DCA), an investigational drug used for lactic acidosis and, recently, solid tumors.
