The two-component regulatory system CiaRH of Streptococcus pneumoniae affects β-lactam susceptibility, autolysis, bacteriocin production, competence development, host colonization and virulence. The system was discovered in a screen for S. pneumoniae R6 mutants resistant to the β-lactam antibiotic cefotaxime.
