Summary In a variety of chronic pain conditions, calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is expressed at high levels in the skin, blood, and cerebrospinal fluid. Our results reveal that much of the increase may be due to the CGRPβ isoform made by epidermal keratinocytes, which express high levels of CGRP immunoreactivity in a variety of human and animal chronic pain conditions.
