Factor XI (FXI) plays a dual role in haemostasis and thrombosis. It contributes to thrombin generation and promotes inhibition of fibrinolysis. Severe FXI deficiency was shown to confer protection against arterial and venous thrombosis in animal models without compromising haemostasis.
