A distinctive metabolic trait of tumors is their enforced aerobic glycolysis. This phenotype was first reported by Otto Warburg, who suggested that the increased glucose consumption of cancer cells under aerobic conditions might result from an impaired bioenergetic activity of their mitochondria.
