Blood transfusion practices have resulted in iatrogenic cases of variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) and it is known that sheep blood is also infectious in the pre-clinical stages of natural scrapie and experimentally induced bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE).
