Monoaminergic neurons include the physiologically important central serotonergic and noradrenergic subtypes. Here, we identify the zinc-finger transcription factor, Insm1, as a crucial mediator of the differentiation of both subtypes, and in particular the acquisition of their neurotransmitter phenotype.
