The neuronal nitric oxide synthase gene (NOS1) is located on 12q24, in a susceptibility region for schizophrenia, and produces nitric oxide (NO) in the brain. NO plays a role in neurotransmitter release and is the second messenger of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor.
