Thyroid hormone receptor beta (TRbeta) dysfunction leads to deafness in humans and mice. Deafness in TRbeta(-/-) mutant mice has been attributed to TRbeta-mediated control of voltage- and Ca(2+)-activated K(+) (BK) channel expression in inner hair cells (IHCs).
