Mutations in the ATM kinase cause the neurodegenerative disorder ataxia telangiectasia (A-T) and affected individuals are exquisitely radiation-sensitive and cancer-prone. Cells derived from A-T individuals contain chromosome aberrations and exhibit profound cellular radiosensitivity.
