Caffeine produces mild psychostimulant and sometimes anxiogenic effects by antagonizing adenosine at A(1) and A(2A) receptors, and perhaps through interactions with other transmitter systems. Adenosine receptors are colocalized and functionally interact with dopamine receptors in the brain.
