The hepatitis C virus (HCV) NS3/4A protease acts as an antagonist of virus-induced interferon (IFN) regulatory factor (IRF)-3 activation and IFN-beta expression. The NS3/4A protease performs this function by cleaving Cardif and TRIF proteins to block retinoic-acid-inducible gen I (RIG-I) and toll-like receptor (TLR)-3 signaling, respectively.
