Francisella tularensis is a zoonotic, Gram-negative coccobacillus that causes tularemia in humans and animals. F. tularensis subspecies tularensis (type A) and F. tularensis subspecies holarctica (type B) are antigenically similar and more virulent than Francisella novicida in humans.
