Malignant astrocytomas are the most common and lethal adult primary brain tumor. Retroviral gene trapping of nontransformed neonatal astrocytes from a glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP):(V12)Ha-Ras murine astrocytoma model led to isolation of the transcription factor Gata6.
