Methanococcus maripaludis and Methanocaldococcus jannaschii produce cysteine for protein synthesis using a tRNA-dependent pathway. These methanogens charge tRNA(Cys) with l-phosphoserine, which is also an intermediate in the predicted pathways for serine and cystathionine biosynthesis.
