OBJECTIVE: Intraplaque hemorrhage increases the risk of plaque rupture and thrombosis. The release of hemoglobin (Hb) from extravasated erythrocytes at the site of hemorrhage leads to iron deposition, which may increase oxidation and inflammation in the atherosclerotic plaque.
