The Polycomb group (PcG) gene BMI1 is required for the proliferation and self-renewal of normal and leukemic stem cells. Overexpression of Bmi1 oncogene causes neoplastic transformation of lymphocytes and plays essential role in pathogenesis of myeloid leukemia.
