Binding of cyclic AMP (cAMP) to the cell surface receptor induces a transient activation of guanylate cyclase in Dictyostelium discoideum. A frigid mutant (HC85) which lacks G alpha 2, a guanine nucleotide binding protein, does not respond to cAMP.
