Magnetic resonance (MR) imaging studies have identified hippocampal structural alterations in the pathogenesis of schizophrenia. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) is one of the neurotrophins that is widely expressed in the hippocampal formation and has been implicated in the neurobiology of schizophrenia.
