An fa allele of the leptin receptor gene (Lepr(fa)) of the Zucker fatty rat was introduced into the genome of the Spontaneously Diabetic Torii (SDT) rat, an inbred model of nonobese type 2 diabetes mellitus, through the 'Speed congenic method'.
