Both eukaryotes and archaebacteria use 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme A (HMG-CoA) reductase to synthesize mevalonate, which eukaryotes employ in the production of sterols and archaebacteria need for the isoprenoid side chains of their unique and characteristic lipids.
