BACKGROUND: The immunosuppressive drug cyclosporine (INN, ciclosporin), whose pharmacokinetic characteristics vary greatly among individuals, is a substrate for cytochrome P450 (CYP) 3A and P-glycoprotein, the product of the multidrug resistance 1 (MDR1) gene.
