The bar loci in the chromosome of bacteriophage lambda inhibit phage vegetative growth in bacteria defective for peptidyl-tRNA hydrolase (Pth). Expression of the bar regions results in accumulation of peptidyl-tRNA, inhibition of protein synthesis, and arrest of mutant cell growth.
