BACKGROUND: Tubulointerstitial fibrosis leads to progressive kidney disease and, ultimately, may result in end-stage renal disease (ESRD). Myofibroblasts, which express alpha-smooth muscle actin (alpha-SMA) in their cytoplasm, regulate renal fibrogenesis.
