The intrinsic protein-tyrosine kinase activity of the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor is required for signal transduction. Increased protein-tyrosine kinase activity is observed following the binding of EGF to the receptor. However, signaling is rapidly desensitized during EGF treatment.
