BACKGROUND: Atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) has vasodilating and diuretic/natriuretic properties, both of which contribute to lower blood pressure. These effects are mediated by binding of ANP to a cell-surface receptor [type A guanylyl cyclase (GC-A)].
