Phenotypic allelic exclusion at the TCRalpha locus is developmentally regulated in thymocytes. Many immature thymocytes express two cell surface alpha-chain species. Following positive selection, the vast majority of mature thymocytes and peripheral T cells display a single cell surface alpha-chain.
