Multidrug resistance (MDR) phenotypes in cancer cells are associated with overexpression of the drug carrier P-glycoprotein. The antiparasitic drug ivermectin, one of its substrates, abnormally accumulates in the brain of transgenic mice lacking the P-glycoprotein, resulting in neurotoxicity.
