There are two general pathways by which multicellular eukaryotes repair double-strand DNA breaks (DSB): homologous recombination (HR) and nonhomologous DNA end joining (NHEJ). All mammalian mutants in the NHEJ pathway demonstrate a lack of B and T lymphocytes and ionizing radiation sensitivity.
