Saccharomyces cerevisiae mutants deficient in folate synthesis have been constructed and employed to study the utilisation of exogenous folates in yeast. One mutant specifically lacked dihydropteroate synthase while the second lacked dihydrofolate synthase. Exogenous folinic acid restored optimal growth to both strains.
