Heavy alcohol consumption, particularly in combination with cigarette smoking, increases the risk of oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC). Alcohol dehydrogenase 3 (ADH3) converts ethanol to acetaldehyde, which is a suspected oral carcinogen.
