The telomerase enzyme lengthens telomeres, an activity essential for chromosome stability in most eukaryotes. The enzyme is composed of a specialized reverse transcriptase and a template RNA. In Saccharomyces cerevisiae, overexpression of TLC1, the telomerase RNA gene, disrupts telomeric structure.
