ATM, the gene mutated in ataxia-telangiectasia (A-T), mediates multiple cellular responses to DNA damage. A-T homozygotes have a high risk of cancer and exhibit spontaneous chromosomal instability, and cultured A-T cells react abnormally to ionizing radiation.
